Crê-se que Joana terá sido a única mulher no governo da Igreja Católica, terá governa-do-a cerca de dois a três anos, algures entre os papados de Leão IV e Bento III entre 850 e 1100.
No entanto a sua lenda só se tornou originária no final do século IX.
Existem duas versões, mais famosas, na primeira Joana seria de origem oriental e que nascera com o nome de Gilberta (txi tadinha xD) pensa-se também que para escapar à proibição de estudar imposta às mulheres se fez passar por homem, sendo extremamente culta quando chegou a Roma supreendeu os doutores da Igreja. Após a morte de Leão IV adoptou o nome de João VII e chegou ao carga de Papa. Nesta mesma versão Joana tornara-se amante de um oficial da Guarda Suiça e engravidou.
Noutra versão pensa-se que Joana nasceu na Alemanha, filha de um casal inglês, atingindo a idade adulta apaixonou-se por um monge e foram para a Grécia.
De regresso a Roma para evitar o escândalo da relação Joana passara por homem com o nome de Johannes Angelicus. Conseguindo ser nomeada cardeal ficou conhecida como João, o Inglês acabando por ser nomeada Papa por unanimidade em 885.
Mesmo que tenha sido fácil esconder a gravidez, devido às roupas largas, Joana não resistiu às dores do parto a meio de uma procissão e deu à luz diante de uma multidão.
Numa versão do final da lenda, Joana teria sido amarrada a um cavalo e apedrejada até à morte.
Noutra Joana morrera devido a complicações do parto.

In another version it is thought that Joan was born in Germany, the daughter of an English couple, reaching adulthood she fell in love with a monk and went to Greece.Returning to Rome, to avoid the scandal of the relationship Joan passed through man by the name of Johannes Angelicus. Getting to be named cardinal, she was known as John, the English, eventually beeing nominated unanimously Pope in the year 885.Although it was easy to hide the pregnancy, due to loose clothing, Joan could not withstand the pain of childbirth through a procession and gave birth to a crowd. In a final version of the legend, Joan would have been tied to a horse and stoned to death.
In another version Joan died due to complications of childbirth.
